Heiligendamm, on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg, was Germany's oldest sea resort — founded in 1793 — and by the Weimar inflation years its Badeverwaltung (spa administration) was among the countless municipal and private bodies forced to print their own small-denomination scrip as federal coinage disappeared from circulation entirely. This Notgeld exists because hoarding and metal shortages made official pfennig coins functionally unavailable, not because any monetary authority sanctioned it.

The DeNG 2#590.1-2/3 reference suggests at least two distinct types within this issue — likely color or text variants, a common practice among Notgeld printers who produced collectible sets deliberately aimed at the booming philatelic trade of 1921–1922.
