| Obverse description | Grey-toned notgeld on pale blue paper, enclosed within a bold red rectangular border. The upper field carries the issuer legend in Gothic script, with the large denomination numerals '25' flanking a central circular vignette of a deciduous tree on a small mound. Halstenbek is a small municipality in Holstein, northwest of Hamburg, and like hundreds of similarly modest German towns it issued Notgeld during the early 1920s inflationary period when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. The Konrad Hanf printing house in Hamburg handled a significant volume of local Notgeld commissions from surrounding communities, which partly explains the competent but unsentimental production quality typical of these issues.
Pfennig-denomination notes of this type circulated intensely and briefly — most were redeemed or simply discarded once the emergency passed, making genuinely worn examples rarer than pristine ones.
