Opmerkingen

Gera's 1920 Kleingeldscheine were a direct response to the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the immediate postwar years — silver had been hoarded or melted, and the Reichsbank could not produce fractional coinage fast enough to meet demand. Municipalities across Germany were legally empowered to fill the gap themselves, and hundreds did. Gera was among the more prolific Thuringian issuers.

Local printing kept costs down but quality variable. Paper stocks used by smaller city issuers in this period are often acidic and prone to toning, which affects survivability more than handling does.
