Hannoversch Münden issued Notgeld during the postwar small-change famine that emptied German pockets of coins between 1918 and 1921. Municipal authorities across the country were effectively forced into printing their own subsidiary currency when the Reichsbank couldn't keep pace with demand — Hann. Münden was one of thousands of German towns that stepped into that gap.
J. Adolf Schwarz of Lindenberg im Allgäu was a minor regional printer who handled a considerable volume of municipal Notgeld contracts during this period. The DeNG reference places this within a numbered series of five variants (578.1-1/5), suggesting the city issued multiple design runs rather than a single uniform emission.
