Hofgeismar is a small town in Hesse-Nassau, and its Kreissparkasse — a district savings bank, not a central monetary authority — issued this 25 Pfennig note as Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany after the First World War. Municipal and institutional issuers of this kind proliferated rapidly between 1917 and 1922, filling a vacuum left by the disappearance of metal coinage from everyday commerce.

Gebrüder Gotthelft in Cassel was a regional press that handled a substantial volume of Hessian Notgeld contracts. Their output for smaller district issuers tends toward functional rather than decorative printing — a contrast to the elaborate collector-oriented Notgeld produced elsewhere in the same period.
