Rheinsberg's 25 Pfennig notgeld is one of a wave of municipal emergency issues produced when small change effectively vanished from German circulation during and after the First World War. The Magistrat commissioned the design from Robert Koch — almost certainly the local commercial artist of that name, not the bacteriologist — and contracted printing to the Görlitzer Nachrichten und Anzeiger, a regional newspaper publisher in Görlitz that took on notgeld contracts as a sideline during this period.
The single signature, Poppe, belongs to a Rheinsberg municipal official whose exact title the records do not reliably confirm. Görlitz-printed notgeld from newspaper presses tends to show slightly uneven ink distribution under magnification — a known characteristic of that printer's output.
