Bullenkuhlen is a village in Holstein that, by the 1920 census, held fewer than 200 residents — making it one of the smallest municipalities in Germany to issue its own notgeld. The 1921 dating places this squarely in the second wave of small-denomination paper notgeld, driven less by genuine coin shortage than by the collector market that had developed around these local issues by 1920–21. Municipalities quickly recognized that philatelic and notgeld collectors would buy and hoard these notes, generating revenue without ever having to redeem them.
The DeNG 2#206.2 suffix indicates at least two known varieties for this denomination from Bullenkuhlen.
