Woldegk is a small market town in Mecklenburg, and this 1921 emergency issue is one of dozens of near-identical municipal Notgeld pieces produced across the region as postwar coin shortages forced local authorities to print their own fractional currency. The printer, Hofbuchdrucker Bohls Nachfolger in Neustrelitz, handled multiple Mecklenburg civic commissions during this period — the "Hofbuchdrucker" title indicates a former court printer designation, a holdover from the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz that had ceased to exist just three years earlier.
The W55.4b suffix in the DeNG reference distinguishes it by paper or ink variant within the Woldegk series.
