Heeßen is a small village in the Weser Uplands, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921 it issued its own Notgeld to plug the chronic small-change shortage that had persisted since the war. What makes this series worth attention is the printer and designer pairing: Edler & Krische in Hanover were among the more design-conscious Notgeld producers, and Rudolf Hillebrecht — later a significant figure in postwar German urban planning — was at this stage of his career producing graphic work for exactly these kinds of regional commissions.

The single authorizing signature belongs to a local official recorded only as Meier, which is about as much administrative apparatus as a village of this size could muster.
