Gebesee is a small town in Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921, its local magistrate issued Notgeld to plug the chronic shortage of small-denomination coins that had plagued Germany since the war years. The inflation spiral that would peak catastrophically in 1923 was already well underway; Reichsbank metal coinage had essentially vanished from everyday commerce through hoarding and export, forcing town councils to act unilaterally.
Arthur Kirchner's Erfurt print shop produced a large volume of regional Notgeld during this period, serving numerous Thuringian municipalities. The DeNG reference distinguishes two sub-variants (.1 and .2) within this type.
