Vlotho's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the enormous wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany during the coin shortage following the First World War. The Gebrüder Jänecke firm in Hannover printed enormous quantities of Notgeld for dozens of small towns during this period — quality was consistent, turnaround fast. Designer E. Supan of nearby Detmold contributed the artwork, a reminder that many of these commissions went to local or regional artists rather than established commercial illustrators.

Vlotho, a small town on the Weser in Lippe-Detmold, issued multiple denominations in this series. The 1366.1a-2/3 suffix in the DeNG reference indicates a known variant distinction within the type.
