Oberammergau's 1921 notgeld issue came during the same year as the town's famous Passion Play — performed every decade since 1634 as a vow following a devastating plague. The municipality almost certainly timed the scrip's release to coincide with the influx of pilgrims and tourists that the Play draws, using local emergency currency as both a practical necessity during the inflationary crisis and, frankly, as a souvenir opportunity.
Brendamour, Simhart & Co. were among Munich's more accomplished chromolithographers of the period, responsible for high-quality notgeld across Bavaria.
