Oberwesel's 1921 Pfennig Notgeld belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany as coin shortages deepened in the inflationary spiral following the First World War. Hundreds of German towns issued their own small-denomination notes during this period, and many — including Oberwesel's — were produced with an eye toward the collector trade as much as genuine circulation, a practice that became increasingly commercial by 1921.
Designer C. Kayse is not well-documented in the broader Notgeld literature. Whether the design was executed locally or contracted out to one of the specialist printers handling bulk Notgeld production across the Rhineland remains unclear.
