Comments

Butzbach's 1921 emergency issue belongs to the Notgeld flood that swept German municipalities after the Reichsbank failed to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation. Metal had been hoarded, melted, or simply never reminted fast enough to meet postwar demand, leaving towns to print their own stopgaps. Scharfes Druckereien in Wetzlar handled a considerable volume of this regional Kleingeldersatz work during 1920–1922, supplying notes to multiple Hessian communities from a single production base.

Designer O. Peier is otherwise unattested in the major Notgeld reference literature — likely a local commercial artist rather than a specialist printmaker.
