| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in black, red, and yellow on white paper, with bold vertical red stripes forming a frame on the left and right edges. At the top centre, the Hachenburg municipal coat of arms — an eagle over a crenellated wall, dated 1314 — is framed by decorative scrollwork, flanked on both sides by the large numeral '25' and the denomination 'Pf.' below. The central text reads 'NOTGELD DER STADT HACHENBURG' in bold letterpress, followed by a validity clause in German script, the issuance date 'Hachenburg, 1. Hachenburg is a small town in the Westerwald, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921, it issued its own Notgeld to plug the chronic small-change shortage that followed the war. The Reichsbank's coin output had collapsed, and local authorities were legally permitted — even encouraged — to fill the gap. G. Hunckel of Bremen supplied a number of these municipal issues, operating as a regional printer for Notgeld contracts across northwestern Germany during the early 1920s inflation period.
Hachenburg's series is not among the more elaborately produced Notgeld issues of the period, which actually worked against its survival — collectors of the era favored decorative multi-color sets, leaving plainer issues less systematically preserved.
