Schmölln's notgeld issues of 1921 came from a town that had built its regional identity almost entirely around the button-manufacturing industry — at the time, Schmölln and its surroundings produced a significant share of Germany's bone and horn buttons, a fact the municipal authorities were apparently not shy about commemorating in local scrip. Schneider & Co. in nearby Altenburg handled a large volume of Thuringian emergency currency during this period, making them the practical default printer for dozens of small Saxon and Thuringian municipalities who needed small-denomination paper quickly.
