Genthin is a small town in the Magdeburg district of Saxony-Anhalt, and this note is a product of the Kleingeldersatz crisis that swept Weimar Germany in 1920–1922. The Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small-denomination coinage — driven by wartime metal shortages and postwar hoarding — forced hundreds of German municipalities to print their own emergency fractional currency. Genthin was one of thousands that did exactly that.
Two Erfurt printers share credit here, suggesting the job was split between design and press work — Alfred Hanf and Arthur Kirchner both operated out of the same city, a common arrangement for small Notgeld commissions.
