Osterfeld's 1921 notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — by this point less a response to genuine coin shortage than a calculated exploitation of collector demand. Towns across Westphalia were commissioning decorative series knowing philatelists would buy them before a single note entered a shop till. Gebrüder Jänecke in Hannover handled a significant volume of this work, supplying municipalities throughout the region with competent if formulaic printing.
