Angerburg — now Węgorzewo in northeastern Poland — was a small East Prussian administrative town, and its Magistrat issued this note during the Notgeld peak years when municipal authorities across Germany were filling a genuine small-change vacuum left by the wartime hoarding of coin. Hartung & Co. in Hamburg handled a considerable volume of provincial Notgeld printing in this period, producing competent but rarely distinguished work for dozens of local issuers.
The designer credit to Hans Philipp as an architect rather than a commercial illustrator is worth noting — municipal Notgeld commissions frequently went to local professional men with drafting skills rather than trained graphic artists.
