Brieg — now Brzeg, Poland — was one of dozens of Lower Silesian municipalities that issued Notgeld during the early 1920s as the Reichsbank struggled to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation. The Stadt Brieg series was printed in multiple design variants, and the distinction between sub-types in this series (the Grabowski B89.4a designation separating it from the 4b) typically comes down to paper stock or serial number font — differences easily overlooked without direct comparison.
Lower Silesian Notgeld from this period was rendered worthless by the hyperinflation that peaked in late 1923, meaning most circulated examples were discarded rather than redeemed.
