This 25 Pfennig piece belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across Germany in 1921, when the central monetary system was buckling under postwar inflation and coin shortages left local governments scrambling to keep daily commerce moving. The Wiedemannsche Druckerei in nearby Saalfeld handled production for several Thuringian municipalities during this period, which likely kept unit costs manageable for a town the size of Ranis.
