Rückseitenbeschreibung The obverse of this Notgeld Gutschein is typographically composed in blackletter script on a plain cream ground, with a large red numeral '25' centered at the top serving as the denomination indicator. Six lines of Fraktur text set out the legal conditions of acceptance at all local municipal cash offices and redemption terms stipulated by the Magistrat. The issuing authority block at the lower center reads 'DER MAGISTRAT' above a manuscript signature, followed by 'DER BÜRGERVORSTEHER-WORTFÜHRER' above a second manuscript signature, the place and date 'Verden/Aller, den 1. Juni 1920', and the printer's imprint along the bottom margin.

Anmerkungen

Verden an der Aller was a small episcopal town in Lower Saxony, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1920, its Magistrat was forced to print its own fractional currency because the Reichsbank simply could not keep small-denomination coin in circulation. Postwar metal shortages and hoarding had gutted the coinage supply. J. C. König & Ebhardt — a Hanover printing house with a long commercial pedigree — handled enormous volumes of this municipal Notgeld work during the period, producing notes for dozens of towns across the region.

Verden's issues are modestly collected today, mostly by Notgeld specialists working the Lower Saxony regional series.
