Kreissparkasse zu Diepholz issued this note as part of the broader Notgeld wave that followed the acute small-change shortage gripping postwar Germany. Municipal savings banks across the provinces were stepping in where the Reichsbank couldn't — or wouldn't — supply adequate coinage for everyday transactions. Diepholz, a small administrative district in Lower Saxony, was typical of hundreds of such issuers printing locally rather than waiting for central relief.

Schrödersche Buchdruckerei was the town's own print shop. Three signatories — Lohans, Kläning, and Primy — suggest committee authorization rather than single-officer issuance, which was common at the Kreis level.
