Gollnow — now Goleniów in northwestern Poland — issued this Notgeld during the severe small-change shortage that followed the First World War, when German municipalities were legally permitted to print their own emergency currency to fill the void left by hoarded and melted coinage. The printer, Krey und Sommerlad of Niedersedlitz near Dresden, produced Notgeld for dozens of municipal clients during this period and operated essentially as a commercial job printer rather than a security press.
The G30.4b reference suggests multiple varieties exist within the Gollnow 25 Pfennig series — likely differing in paper stock, ink shade, or serial numbering convention. Worth identifying carefully before cataloging.
