Krefeld's notgeld program in 1919 was typical of the Rhineland's postwar small-change crisis, when coin hoarding and metal shortages left municipal governments scrambling to fill the void. Worms & Lüthgen, a local Crefeld printing house, handled production — keeping the job firmly within the city rather than routing it through Leipzig or Berlin as many larger municipalities did.
The spelling discrepancy between the issuer name ("Crefeld") and the modern city name (Krefeld) reflects the official renaming that had occurred just years earlier, in 1916. Some notgeld from this series retains the old form, others the new — worth noting when cataloging multiples.
