Limburg's 1918 Notgeld issue was one of thousands of municipal emergency currency schemes that proliferated across Germany as the imperial government lost control of small-denomination coin supply — hoarding and metal requisitioning had gutted circulation by mid-war. Cities, towns, and even individual businesses were legally permitted to fill the gap themselves, which produced an extraordinary range of local printing quality. Naumann's Frankfurt shop was a competent commercial printer, not a specialist security printer, which is exactly what most Notgeld commissioners could afford.
Assmann's designer credit is unusually specific for a note of this type and value — most Kleingeldscheine at this level went uncredited.
