Zittau's 1918 Kleingeldscheine emerged from the same municipal desperation felt across Germany as wartime metal hoarding drained coins from everyday commerce. The city, sitting hard against the Saxon corner where Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bohemia met, had particular reason to keep small change circulating — border trade made even 25 Pfennig a practical necessity.
J. P. Himmer in Augsburg, a reliable provincial job printer, handled much of this emergency municipal work across southern Germany. The DeNG reference suffix "a" indicates the first known type variant within the Z12 series, suggesting at least one subsequent printing adjustment was made.
