Weilburg's 1920 Notgeld issue belongs to the massive wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany following the postwar coin shortage — by 1920, the Reichsbank had effectively abandoned small denomination coinage to local authorities, leaving towns like Weilburg to contract with regional printers and design their own scrip.
