Langeln is a small village in the Pinneberg district of Holstein — the kind of municipality that during the Kleingeldnot of 1918–1921 issued its own emergency small-change notes simply because coins had vanished from circulation entirely. Hanf was a Hamburg-based printer responsible for a significant volume of north German Notgeld, working quickly and cheaply for dozens of tiny communes that would never have warranted their own currency under any other circumstances.

The designer credit to Erna Marg. von Krieger is unusual — named individual designers on parish-level Notgeld are not common, suggesting either local pride or a deliberate artistic commission rather than a stock design off the printer's shelf.
