Piedfort coins — struck at twice the standard planchet thickness — have no circulation function; they exist purely as collector and presentation pieces, a tradition revived by French and British mints in the late 20th century that Cuba adopted for several of its hard-currency export issues. The "Homeland and Freedom" series was produced explicitly to generate foreign exchange, as the Cuban government used numismatic exports as one of several mechanisms to circumvent the economic pressure of the U.S. embargo. The six KM piedfort references spanning this production window suggest multiple annual releases within the same design program.
