This coin commemorates the 150th anniversary of Argentina's first national coinage, the Provincias del Río de la Plata issues of 1813 — struck at Potosí under the authority of the newly formed Asamblea del Año XIII, the revolutionary assembly that, while falling short of declaring full independence, was the first body to authorize coinage in the name of the Argentine people rather than the Spanish crown. The 1813 originals were produced in both silver and gold at a mint then still geographically within what is now Bolivia.
