Additional information

The Banco Central de la República Dominicana has issued bimetallic and base-metal coinage in fits and starts since its founding in 1947, with denominations frequently restructured in response to peso devaluations that accelerated sharply through the 1980s and 1990s. The 25-peso coin emerged as a practical necessity once inflation had rendered smaller denominations functionally worthless for everyday transactions.

KM#127 circulated through a period of relative monetary stability by Dominican historical standards, the central bank having implemented orthodox fiscal controls following the catastrophic 2003 banking crisis that briefly pushed inflation above 40 percent annually.
