Struck to commemorate the May 1906 wedding of Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, the ceremony itself was interrupted when anarchist Mateo Morral threw a bomb concealed in a bouquet of flowers at the royal carriage in Madrid's Calle Mayor. Over twenty people were killed; the couple survived. This coin was already in production or circulation when the attack occurred.
The nickel-zinc composition marks a departure from Spain's earlier silver coinage and reflects the fiscal constraints of a monarchy already losing its grip on imperial revenues following 1898.
