Villa del Río is a small municipality in Córdoba province, and this note is one of hundreds of local emergency scrip issues produced during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government authorized — and often simply tolerated — town committees printing their own currency to keep local economies functioning after the banking system effectively collapsed in Nationalist-held or contested zones.
