Equatorial Guinea's 1969 coinage was issued almost immediately after independence from Spain in October 1968, making this among the first sovereign issues of one of Africa's smallest and most resource-poor nations. The peseta guineana was pegged to the Spanish peseta at par, a deliberate holdover from colonial monetary infrastructure that lasted only until 1975, when Macías Nguema's increasingly erratic dictatorship severed remaining economic ties with Madrid and replaced the currency entirely with the ekwele.
