Saint Helena issued this piece under the authority granted by its status as a British Overseas Territory, participating in the wave of Commonwealth commemoratives marking the July 1981 wedding. The marriage drew commemorative coinages from dozens of territories simultaneously, making Saint Helena's contribution one of dozens of near-identical programs struck to the same 28.28g crown specification — a format the Royal Mint effectively franchised across the Commonwealth for the occasion.
