Beschrijving voorzijde Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, after the effigy modelled by Arnold Machin. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a smooth field. The circumferential legend reads QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND along the right and upper arc, with the regnal anniversary dates 1952-1977 along the left arc, all in raised Latin capitals within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Gibraltar issued this crown-sized commemorative in the same wave of Silver Jubilee pieces produced across British territories in 1977, most sharing identical specifications under a coordinated Colonial Office arrangement. What distinguishes Gibraltar's issue from the broader flood of Jubilee crowns is the territory's particular political tension at the time — Spain had closed the border with Gibraltar in 1969, and it remained shut throughout the Jubilee year, leaving the Rock in an unusual state of enforced insularity that made British ceremonial coinage politically pointed rather than merely celebratory. The border would not reopen until 1982.
