Issued to mark the silver wedding anniversary of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1972, this piece was struck by the Isle of Man — then, as now, a Crown Dependency with its own coinage rights independent of the Royal Mint. The 25 pence denomination was adopted specifically for commemorative crown-sized issues across British territories during this period, following the decimalization of February 1971 which converted the traditional five-shilling crown to its decimal equivalent.
The .925 silver proof version was produced in strictly limited numbers for collectors, while a cupro-nickel circulation strike ran alongside it.
