The "Cartwheel Penny" name refers to the enormous copper twopences and pennies struck at Boulton & Watt's Soho Mint in Birmingham in 1797 — coins so thick and heavy they were nicknamed for their resemblance to wagon wheels. Saint Helena's connection to that original issue is oblique at best: the island was an East India Company possession at the time, operating its own token coinage independently of the London-controlled currency that Boulton's contract was meant to stabilize. This 2019 silver restrike leans on the aesthetic of that Georgian original while carrying the authority of a Crown dependency issuer with minimal circulation history of its own.
