Issued as part of Tonga's 1975 commemorative program, this coin honors the dynastic connection between the reigning king Taufa'ahau Tupou IV and his ancestor King George Tupou I, who unified the Tongan islands under a single constitutional monarchy in 1875 — exactly a century before this coin was struck. George Tupou I negotiated Tonga's survival as an independent state through a series of treaties with European powers, a distinction that made Tonga the only Pacific nation never formally colonized.
The centennial timing of the 1875 constitution was the direct occasion for this issue.
