Obverse description Central field features the elaborately engraved royal cypher of Oscar II — the interlaced initials 'O II' in ornate script — surmounted by a large royal crown with arched bands and jewelled rim. The monogram rests on a decorative foliate base with scrollwork flourishes. A beaded inner border frames the design, and the legend BRODERFOLKENES VEL curves around the upper and right periphery in Roman capitals.

Additional information

Oscar II acceded to the Norwegian throne in 1872 following the death of his brother Karl XV, and the coinage reforms of the mid-1870s coincided almost exactly with Norway's entry into the Scandinavian Monetary Union in 1875. That agreement — between Norway, Sweden, and Denmark — pegged their respective currencies to a shared gold standard and forced a wholesale redesign of circulating silver, explaining why so many Norwegian types appear or are substantially revised in 1876.

KM#354 was struck at Kongsberg, the only mint Norway operated throughout the nineteenth century.
