The Kongelige Grønlandske Handel operated Greenland as a closed trading monopoly, and these small-denomination notes were effectively scrip — valid only within the controlled settlements and of no use beyond them. The 1892 issue predates the printed serial number series by several decades; on Type I notes, the serial was entered by hand at the time of issue, a clerical practice that makes each example unique but also introduces considerable variation in ink, handwriting, and legibility.
The monopoly system meant these notes circulated in near-total isolation from Danish monetary policy. Worn examples are common. Clean ones suggest they were never far from a trading post ledger.
