Issued to mark the 40th anniversary of Carol I's reign, this coin was struck for the General Exposition of Bucharest in 1906 — a grand event Romania used to project national modernity and economic confidence to a European audience. The exposition ran from June through November and drew over a million visitors, extraordinary for a country of Romania's size at the time.
Mintage was tightly limited, and the coin circulated little if at all. Fr#7 in Friedberg's gold census confirms its place among the commemorative issues rather than the everyday monetary coinage of the period.
