The Maldives Monetary Authority was established in 1981, replacing the Maldivian Monetary Authority and marking the islands' first fully independent central banking structure. This nickel brass issue appeared in the early years of that institution, a period when the rufiyaa was being stabilized against persistent trade imbalances driven almost entirely by the fisheries and, increasingly, nascent tourism revenues. The twelve-year production window across 1984–1996 suggests steady demand without the interruptions that plagued some contemporaneous island-nation coinages.
