Mehmed VI was the last reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire, deposed in November 1922 as Mustafa Kemal's nationalist government abolished the sultanate. Coins struck under his name span the entire collapse — from the Allied occupation of Constantinople to his departure by British warship. The dating range of this issue means any given piece may have been struck while Ottoman sovereignty over the capital was effectively nominal.
The Hegira year on the obverse determines the specific striking year; collectors should verify the regnal year against known mint records rather than assuming continuous production across the full range.
