This denomination belongs to the resht series struck at Constantinople during the years Ottoman finances were under severe strain from simultaneous campaigns on multiple fronts — Gallipoli, the Caucasus, Mesopotamia. Gold coinage of this period was hoarded almost immediately upon issue, which is why survivors in circulated grades are actually harder to locate than uncirculated examples. The empire suspended convertibility of paper currency in 1914, making gold coin increasingly scarce in everyday commerce.
