Croatia's 25 kuna denominations have historically marked specific anniversaries of the 1991 independence declaration, and this 2016 issue commemorates the 25th. The kuna itself — the currency unit — takes its name from the marten pelt used as a unit of value in medieval Croatian trade, a fact that gave the currency unusual etymological authenticity when it was reintroduced upon independence. Croatia retired the kuna entirely in January 2023 upon eurozone accession, making the full run of commemorative issues a closed series.
