Issued to commemorate the Danube as a shared European waterway, this piece appeared the same year Croatia was navigating post-war reconstruction following the 1991–1995 conflict. The bimetallic format was a deliberate choice by the Croatian National Bank to align with contemporary European coinage standards at a moment when Zagreb was keen to signal institutional normalcy to international partners.
The brass-in-cupro-nickel construction uses an aluminium-bearing alloy uncommon in mainstream European issues of the period.
