| Obverse description | The dodecagonal coin features a bimetallic design with a gold-toned central disk bearing the large numeral '25' in bold relief, with a stylized marten (kuna) depicted within the numerals, and the denomination 'KUNA' inscribed below in the field. The copper-nickel ring carries the legend 'REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA' along the upper arc. The lower portion of the ring is decorated with two ornamental branches — an olive branch to the left and an oak branch to the right — flanking a small embossed rendition of the Croatian coat of arms at the base. |

Croatia formally applied for EU membership in February 2003, and this coin was issued the following year to mark its official candidate status — granted in June 2004 at the same Brussels summit that admitted ten new member states, none of which included Croatia. Full accession wouldn't come until July 2013, nearly a decade after this piece was struck.
