Wolfern is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized communities, it issued Heller notgeld during the First World War and its immediate aftermath when small-denomination coinage disappeared entirely from circulation. The Austro-Hungarian state's wartime metal requisitions stripped copper and nickel from everyday commerce, and local governments were left to print their own stopgap solutions.
The Gemeinde series from this region were typically printed in very small quantities and redeemed locally, which is why survival rates vary dramatically even between neighboring villages. Wolfern's issues are among the less-documented in the Upper Austrian corpus.
